Machu Picchu Circuits Explained
Which Route Should You Choose?
MACHU PICCHU CIRCUITS GUIDE
Choosing the right Machu Picchu circuit is one of the most important decisions you will make when you plan your visit to Machu Picchu. Today, a Machu Picchu ticket is not simply a general entrance ticket. Each ticket is connected to a specific circuit, route, entry time and visitor flow.
This means that the route you choose determines what you will actually see in Machu Picchu: panoramic viewpoints, the classic postcard photo, the main archaeological sectors, the lower temples, Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, Huchuy Picchu, the Inca Bridge or the Sun Gate.
This guide explains the current Machu Picchu circuits and routes in a practical way so you can understand the differences before booking your ticket or designing your private Machu Picchu tour.
Local Expert Note
Machu Picchu rules, routes, entry times and ticket availability can change. This article should be reviewed regularly before publication updates, especially for high-demand dates and official route changes.

What Is the Best Machu Picchu Circuit?
For most first-time visitors, the best Machu Picchu circuit is the Circuit 2 because it offers the strongest balance of classic views and archaeological depth. Circuit 2 includes Route 2-A, known as the designed classic route, and Route 2-B, known as the lower terrace route.

Why Machu Picchu Circuits Matter
Machu Picchu is now managed through defined circuits and routes. Since June 1, 2024, Machu Picchu visits have been organized through three main circuits and ten routes designed to manage visitor flow, protect the site and improve the experience.
This structure is important because travelers cannot freely wander through all areas of the citadel with any ticket. Your ticket determines your route. Once inside, your guide must follow the assigned circuit and direction of travel.
That is why choosing the right Machu Picchu circuit should happen before you choose your train, hotel sequence or exact tour timing. A good private Machu Picchu itinerary coordinates all of these elements together.
The Three Main Machu Picchu Circuits
Machu Picchu is currently organized into three main visitor circuits:
Each circuit includes specific routes. Some routes operate year-round, while others are available only during high season. June to October

Circuit |
Routes |
Main Experience |
|---|---|---|
|
Circuit 1: Panoramic |
1-A Machu Picchu Mountain; 1-B Upper Terrace; 1-C Intipunku ā Sun Gate; 1-D Inca Bridge |
Panoramic views, upper platforms and selected hikes. Routes 1-C and 1-D are high-season routes. |
|
Circuit 2: Classic / Inka City |
2-A Designed Route; 2-B Lower Terrace Route |
Classic Machu Picchu experience with access to important urban and archaeological sectors. |
|
Circuit 3: Royalty |
3-A Huayna Picchu / Waynapicchu; 3-B Designed Route; 3-C Great Cavern; 3-D Huchuy Picchu |
Lower and royal/ceremonial sectors, plus selected mountain or cave routes. Routes 3-C and 3-D are high-season routes. |
Panoramic Circuit
Circuit 1Circuit 1 is the panoramic circuit. It focuses on the upper sectors of Machu Picchu and gives you access to wide views over the Inca city and surrounding mountains.
This circuit is excellent if you care most about scenery, photography and mountain viewpoints. It can also be useful if you already visited Machu Picchu before and want a different perspective.
The important limitation is that Circuit 1 does not give the same lower archaeological experience as Circuit 2. If you expect to walk through the main urban temples, plazas and lower sectors you may be surprised if you book a purely panoramic route.

Machu Picchu Mountain Route
This route combines panoramic access with the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain. It is best for active travelers who want a demanding mountain experience and elevated views over the sanctuary. It is not the best option for travelers who want a relaxed first-time visit or detailed exploration of the lower urban sectors.

Upper Terrace Route
This is a strong option for travelers who want the classic panoramic view without adding a major hike. It is especially useful for photography-focused visitors. However, it remains a panoramic route and does not provide the same depth through the lower archaeological sectors as Circuit 2.

Intipunku / Sun Gate Route
This high-season route leads toward Intipunku, also known as the Sun Gate. It is meaningful for travelers interested in the historic approach used by Inca Trail hikers. It requires more time and should be coordinated carefully with train schedules and physical condition. It takes around 2.5 hours round trip from Machu Picchu.

Inca Bridge Route
This route combines panoramic access with the hike to Machu Picchu Mountain. It is best for active travelers who want a demanding mountain experience and elevated views over the sanctuary. It is not the best option for travelers who want a relaxed first-time visit or detailed exploration of the lower urban sectors.
Classic / Inka City Circuit
Circuit 2Circuit 2 is usually the best Machu Picchu circuit for first-time visitors. It is commonly preferred because it provides the strongest combination of classic views and archaeological areas.
Circuit 2 is the route that allows access to the urban sector of the Inka city, including important areas such as the Temple of the Sun viewpoint, Temple Plaza, Sacred Rock, Eastern Qolqas and Water Mirrors complex.
For travelers booking a private Machu Picchu tour, Circuit 2 is often the route we try to secure first when availability allows. It gives the guide more opportunity to explain how the citadel was organized and why Machu Picchu is much more than a scenic viewpoint.

Designed Classic Route
Route 2-A is one of the strongest choices for first-time travelers. It usually provides a complete classic Machu Picchu experience, combining iconic viewpoints with a meaningful route through key archaeological areas.
Choose Route 2-A if you want the most balanced first visit: classic views, important Inca sectors, private guiding and a deeper understanding of the site.

Lower Terrace Route
Route 2-B is also an excellent choice if you are visiting Machu Picchu by the first time. It includes a strong classic view and access to important parts of the citadel, though the exact visual sequence differs from Route 2-A.
Choose Route 2-B if Route 2-A is not available, or if your travel designer recommends it based on timing, availability and your preferred pace.
Private Tour Recommendation
For a first-time private Machu Picchu experience, Circuit 2-A is usually our first choice when available. Circuit 2-B is often the best alternative for travelers who still want a classic visit with strong guiding value.
Royalty Circuit
Circuit 3Circuit 3 focuses on the lower part of Machu Picchu and the royal or ceremonial areas. It can be a very good option if you want a gentler route, are repeating Machu Picchu, or adding Huayna Picchu, Huchuy Picchu or the Great Cavern.
Circuit 3 includes important sacred and royal spaces such as the Temple of the Sun, the House of the Inka and the Temple of the Condor. However, it may not deliver the classic panoramic Machu Picchu experience that many first-time travelers expect.

Huayna Picchu / Waynapicchu Mountain Route
This route is best for active travelers who want to climb Huayna Picchu, the steep mountain that appears behind Machu Picchu in many famous photos. It requires good physical condition and comfort with steep terrain and heights. It can take around 2 hours round trip (Make sure your train departure is later in the day or next day)

Designed Royalty Route
Route 3-B is often one of the gentler options inside Machu Picchu. It can work well for travelers who need a shorter or less demanding visit, depending on availability and expectations.

Great Cavern Route
This high-season route is for active travelers who want a more specialized hiking experience connected to the Great Cavern, also known as the Temple of the Moon area. It is usually better for repeat visitors or hikers than for classic first-time visits. It can take around 3 hours round trip.

Huchuy Picchu Route
This high-season route includes Huchuy Picchu, a shorter mountain experience compared with Huayna Picchu. It can be a good option for travelers who want an additional viewpoint without committing to the most demanding hikes.

|
Traveler afraid of heights |
Avoid Huayna Picchu and be cautious with Inca Bridge |
Choose a route with gentler terrain. |
Morning vs Afternoon: Does Circuit Choice Matter?
Yes. Circuit choice and entry time should be planned together. Many travelers assume that morning is always best, but the earliest entries can also be busy because overnight visitors, early trains, Inca Trail hikers and group tours often target the same windows.
Afternoon visits can sometimes feel calmer, especially for private travelers who prefer a more relaxed rhythm. However, weather can become cloudier later in the day, especially during the rainy season. The best choice depends on your circuit, season, train schedule and travel style.
For luxury and private travelers, the key is not simply choosing early or late. It is choosing the right combination of ticket, circuit, train, bus, guide and hotel sequence.
How Early Should You Book Machu Picchu Circuits?
Early booking is strongly recommended if you want a preferred circuit, specific entry time, premium train, private guide or boutique hotel.
Circuit 2 routes are among the most requested because many travelers want the classic Machu Picchu experience. Mountain routes such as Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain can also sell out because they have limited spaces.
For high-demand travel dates, begin planning at least 4 months in advance. This is especially important for June, July, August, holiday periods, Easter week, Christmas, New Year and fixed family travel dates.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Buying Any Available Ticket Without Understanding the Route
A Machu Picchu ticket is not interchangeable. Each ticket gives access to a specific route. Buying the wrong route may mean missing the classic view or the archaeological areas you expected.
Assuming Circuit 1 Includes the Main Citadel
Circuit 1 is excellent for panoramic views, but it does not provide the same lower urban route as Circuit 2.
Choosing Huayna Picchu Without Considering Difficulty
Huayna Picchu is iconic, but it is steep and not ideal for every traveler. Comfort with heights matters.
Separating Ticket Planning from Train Planning
Your train schedule, bus timing, guide timing and entrance route should be coordinated together.
Waiting Too Long to Book Circuit 2
If Circuit 2 is important for your trip, do not leave ticket planning until the last minute.
Why a Private Guide Matters for Machu Picchu Circuits
A private guide helps turn a circuit into a meaningful experience. Because each route has limits, a strong guide knows how to pace the visit, explain the areas you are allowed to see and help you understand what the route does and does not include.
With a private guide, the experience can be adapted to your questions, walking rhythm, photography goals and energy level. This is especially valuable for families, senior travelers, couples, photographers and luxury travelers who want a deeper experience without feeling rushed.
