Salkantay Trek Intinerary
Cusco or Sacred Valley – Umasbamba – Pumapunco Canyon – Huchuy Qosqo
Your Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. You travel by private transport toward the Chinchero area, reaching the community of Umasbamba, where the trekking route begins.
After a short orientation and light breakfast, you start hiking through quiet Andean landscapes, rural paths, highland scenery, and open mountain views. This first day is the main trekking day of the journey and introduces you to the beauty of the Sacred Valley from above.
After several hours of hiking, you stop for a scenic picnic lunch at Pumamarca area. From there, the route continues toward Huchuy Qosqo, an important Inca site located above the Sacred Valley.
Upon arrival, your guide leads a focused visit of the archaeological complex, explaining its history, architecture, terraces, and strategic location. In the afternoon, you settle into camp near Huchuy Qosqo, enjoy sunset views over the valley, and spend the night surrounded by the quiet atmosphere of the Andes.
Huchuy Qosqo – Sacred Valley – Ollantaytambo – Train to Aguas Calientes
After breakfast at camp, you enjoy a final morning at Huchuy Qosqo with time for photos and valley views. Then you begin the descent toward Lamay, where your private vehicle will be waiting.
This day is designed to connect the trek with the living culture and historical depth of the Sacred Valley. After the descent, you continue by private transport toward Calca for a textile experience with local artisans. This is a chance to learn about Andean weaving, natural dyes, traditional techniques, and the cultural importance of textiles in the region.
The journey then continues with visits to selected Sacred Valley sites such as Unu Urqo and the Inkarri Museum (Peru’s first experiential museum), adding deeper context before your visit to Machu Picchu. After lunch in Urubamba, you continue to Ollantaytambo, one of the most important living Inca towns in Peru. Your guide will lead a visit of the archaeological site and historic town before your evening train.
Later, you board the train to Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, our team assists with hotel check-in. Your guide will review the plan for the next morning’s Machu Picchu visit, including entry time, circuit, meeting point, bus logistics, and return
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu Guided Visit – Train Return – Cusco or Sacred Valley
After breakfast at your hotel, you meet your guide and take the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu. This is the final and most anticipated day of the journey.
Your guided visit follows the official Machu Picchu circuit available at the time of booking. Depending on your assigned route, your guide will lead you through key areas such as agricultural terraces, ceremonial spaces, temples, viewpoints, residential sectors, and architectural details that reveal the importance of Machu Picchu within the Inca world.
The visit is planned around your official timed entry and current site regulations. Optional hikes such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain may be possible only if requested early and confirmed with availability.
After the guided tour, you return by bus to Aguas Calientes and have time for lunch on your own before boarding the train back to Ollantaytambo. Upon arrival, our team will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

Permits & Availability
The Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu does not require the same limited Inca Trail permit, which makes it a flexible alternative when Classic Inca Trail permits are sold out. However, your Machu Picchu entrance ticket is required and must be secured in advance.
Machu Picchu tickets are limited and assigned by official circuit and entry time. Availability can change quickly, especially during the high season from May to September, so early planning is strongly recommended.

When to Book
The Huchuy Qosqo route is more flexible than the Classic Inca Trail because it does not depend on Inca Trail permit availability. Still, the final visit to Machu Picchu must be coordinated around official ticket availability, train schedules, hotel space in Aguas Calientes, and overall trip logistics.
If this trek is one of your main priorities in Peru, we recommend checking availability as early as possible, especially for travel between May and September. Flexible travel dates can also increase your chances of securing the best Machu Picchu circuit, train schedule, and hotel options.

Information Required to Secure Your Permit

What Happens If Machu Picchu Tickets Are Limited?
If Machu Picchu tickets are limited or your preferred circuit is not available, we will recommend the best possible option based on your travel dates, trekking itinerary, and preferred experience.
Depending on availability, we may adjust the entrance time, confirmed circuit, train schedule, or final-day logistics to create the smoothest possible experience.

Our Recommendation
Before confirming flights or final hotel arrangements around your trek dates, we recommend checking Machu Picchu ticket availability first. Once your entry is secured, we can coordinate the full Huchuy Qosqo experience, including private transfers, camping logistics, Sacred Valley visits, accommodation, meals, train tickets, and local support before and during the journey.
Difficulty & Altitude
The Huchuy Qosqo Trek 3 days is considered a moderate trek. It is not a technical climb and does not require mountaineering experience, but it does involve high-altitude hiking, uneven rural paths, uphill and downhill sections, and one full main trekking day.
You should be comfortable walking for several hours in a day. The pace of a private trek can be adapted to your group whenever trail conditions allow, but a reasonable level of fitness is still important for enjoying the experience.

How Difficult Is the Huchuy Qosqo Trek?
The challenge of the Huchuy Qosqo Trek comes mainly from altitude and the length of the first hiking day.
Day 1 includes several hours of walking through high-Andean terrain before reaching Huchuy Qosqo. The trail is not technical, but the elevation can make the effort feel more demanding than a low-altitude hike. Day 2 includes a shorter descent to Lamay before continuing by vehicle through the Sacred Valley.
This trek is best for active travelers who enjoy hiking, culture, and mountain landscapes, but who may not have time for longer routes such as the Classic Inca Trail or Salkantay.

Highest Point of the Trek
The highest point of the Huchuy Qosqo Trek depends on the final route variation, but it is usually around 4,300-4,370 meters / 14,100-14,337 feet above sea level.
This section requires steady pacing, proper hydration, and good altitude awareness. With a private guide, the pace can be managed according to your group’s rhythm, allowing time for breaks, photos, and support.

Altitude Considerations
Altitude affects each traveler differently. Even fit travelers can feel the effects of elevation, especially when hiking above 3,500 meters / 11,500 feet.
Common altitude-related discomforts may include shortness of breath, fatigue, mild headache, or reduced appetite. These symptoms are not unusual at high elevation, but proper acclimatization before the trek is important.

Recommended Fitness Level
This trek is ideal for travelers with a moderate fitness level. You should be able to walk several hours in a day and feel comfortable with uphill and downhill sections.
Before traveling to Peru, it is helpful to prepare with regular walks, light hikes, stairs, or cardio exercise. If possible, practice walking with a small daypack and comfortable hiking shoes before your trip.

Private Pacing and Support
Because this trek is operated as a private service, your guide can help manage the pace according to your group’s needs. This does not remove the physical challenge of the route, but it creates a more comfortable and personal experience compared to joining a large fixed-pace group.
Your guide will monitor the group’s rhythm, suggest breaks when needed, provide route guidance, and support you through the most demanding sections of the trek.

Who This Route Is Best For
For travelers who prefer less hiking, no camping, or a more comfortable route, a Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by train itinerary may be a better fit.
