Short Inca Trail Trek Itinerary
Cusco or Sacred Valley – Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Aguas Calientes
Your Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu with hotel begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. After a private transfer to the train station, you board the train toward Km 104, the official starting point of the short Inca Trail route.
The trail first leads to Chachabamba, a beautiful archaeological site surrounded by subtropical vegetation. From here, the route gradually climbs through cloud forest and mountain scenery. The most important archaeological stop of the day is Wiñay Wayna, a remarkable Inca site built into the mountainside.
After lunch on the trail, you continue toward Inti Punku, the Sun Gate. This is one of the most emotional moments of the journey. From this viewpoint, Machu Picchu appears below, framed by mountains and afternoon light. After time for photos and interpretation, you continue toward the Machu Picchu area and then descend by bus to Aguas Calientes.
In the evening, you check in to your hotel and enjoy dinner in town. Your guide will confirm the plan for the next morning’s guided Machu Picchu visit.
Machu Picchu Guided Visit – Train Return to Cusco or Sacred Valley
After breakfast at your hotel, you meet your guide and take the shuttle bus back up to Machu Picchu. This second day is dedicated to exploring the citadel with more time, context, and a deeper understanding of the site.
Your guided visit follows the official circuit available at the time of booking. Depending on your assigned route, you may visit important areas such as the agricultural terraces, main temples, ceremonial spaces, residential sectors, viewpoints, and stonework that reveal the intelligence and spiritual vision of the Inca civilization.
After the guided tour, you return by bus to Aguas Calientes. You will have time for lunch on your own before boarding the train back to the Sacred Valley or Cusco. Upon arrival, our team will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.

Permits & Availability
The Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu requires an official permit for the Km 104 route. Availability is limited and permits must be issued under each traveler’s full name and passport details.
For the best chance of securing your preferred date, we recommend booking in advance, especially for travel between May and September. The Inca Trail is usually closed in February for maintenance, and availability can change quickly during high season.
If permits are sold out for your preferred date, we can recommend the best available alternatives, such as Machu Picchu by train, a Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu itinerary, or another private trek depending on your travel style.
Difficulty & Altitude
The Short Inca Trail 2 days is considered a moderate hike. It is shorter than the classic 4-day Inca Trail, but Day 1 still includes several hours of walking, uphill sections, stone steps, and uneven terrain.
This trek is suitable for active travelers who are comfortable walking for a full day at a steady pace. You do not need technical hiking experience, but good walking shoes, reasonable fitness, and proper acclimatization will make the experience much more enjoyable.
Because the Short Inca Trail is lower than the highest sections of the classic route, it is generally easier for acclimatization. Even so, we recommend spending at least one or two nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before starting the trek.
Packing List
We recommend packing light but carefully for this 2-day trek.
