Why Choose This 12-Day Peru Itinerary?
Many Peru itineraries include Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Cusco and the Amazon. What makes this journey different is the way the destinations are sequenced and paced.
This itinerary uses local knowledge to improve the travel experience:

Begin in Lima with culture, cuisine and a smooth arrival before traveling into the Andes.

Continue to the Sacred Valley after landing in Cusco, creating a gentler altitude transition.

Visit Pisac early in the morning, before the largest crowds arrive.

Add a private textile workshop with Ruth for a more personal cultural connection.

Enjoy a picnic lunch with Sacred Valley views instead of a standard tourist stop.

Explore Ollantaytambo in the morning, before most group tours arrive later in the day.

Take the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo with time to rest before the next dayās visit.

Experience Machu Picchu privately, with expert guiding and a carefully planned entry.

Add the Amazon after the Andean portion, creating a natural contrast between highland culture and rainforest immersion.

Lima to Cusco & Private Transfer to the Sacred Valley
After breakfast, you will be transferred privately from your hotel in Lima to Lima International Airport for your flight to Cusco.
Upon arrival in Cusco, your private guide and driver will welcome you at the airport. Instead of staying immediately in Cusco city, you will continue by private transfer into the Sacred Valley, one of the best places to begin the Andean portion of your journey.
This routing is intentional. The Sacred Valley is lower in altitude than Cusco and often feels more relaxed after the flight. Beginning here creates a smoother acclimatization experience before visiting Machu Picchu and returning later to Cusco.
The rest of the afternoon is at leisure to rest and enjoy the hotel services, enjoy the mountain scenery and prepare for the following dayās deeper Sacred Valley experience.

Sacred Valley: Early Pisac, Pachamanca Lunch & Textile Workshop with Ruth
Begin the day with an early private visit to Pisac, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Sacred Valley. Visiting Pisac in the morning is a strategic choice: the site is often quieter, the light over the terraces can be beautiful, and the experience feels more peaceful before the largest visitor flows arrive.
After exploring Pisac with your private guide, continue into the heart of the Sacred Valley for a traditional Pachamanca lunch, one of the Andesā most meaningful culinary experiences. Prepared using hot stones and local ingredients, Pachamanca is more than a meal; it is a connection to the land, the agricultural traditions of the valley, and the Andean idea of honoring Pachamama, Mother Earth.
In the afternoon, enjoy a private textile workshop experience with Ruth, The only indigenous artisan awarded by UNESCO. You will learn about Andean weaving traditions, natural dyes, local techniques and the cultural meaning behind traditional textiles. This experience adds a personal and authentic dimension to your Sacred Valley journey, allowing you to connect with local knowledge in a more intimate way.
This day is designed to combine archaeology, food, culture and human connection without rushing. It is one of the signature experiences of the 12-day journey.

Sacred Valley: Free Morning at the Hotel & Afternoon Moray and Maras
Today begins at a slower pace, allowing you to enjoy your Sacred Valley hotel and the surrounding mountain scenery. This free morning is intentional. Instead of moving every day from one site to another, the 12-day itinerary creates space to rest, adjust to the Andes and enjoy the comfort of your hotel.
You may choose to sleep in, enjoy breakfast slowly, walk through the hotel grounds, schedule a wellness experience, or simply relax before continuing with the afternoon program.
Later in the day, visit Moray and the Maras Salt Mines with your private guide. Moray is known for its circular agricultural terraces, believed to have served as an important Inca agricultural experimentation site. The Maras Salt Mines offer one of the most photogenic landscapes in the Sacred Valley, with thousands of salt pools cascading down the mountainside.
Visiting Moray and Maras in the afternoon is a strategic choice. Many travelers visit these sites earlier in the day, so an afternoon visit can help create a smoother, more comfortable experience with fewer crowds and softer light.
This day reflects the rhythm of the 12-day journey: more time, better pacing and a more refined way to experience Peru.

Ollantaytambo & Train to Machu Picchu Pueblo
Visit Ollantaytambo in the morning, when the experience is generally calmer and more enjoyable. Many group tours arrive in Ollantaytambo later in the afternoon, often before boarding trains to Machu Picchu.
By visiting earlier, you can explore the terraces, stonework, ceremonial areas and living Inca town with a better rhythm.
After the visit, board the train to Machu Picchu Pueblo, also known as Aguas Calientes. Arrive in the early afternoon, enjoy lunch and take the rest of the day to relax at your hotel.
This sequence is both practical and strategic. It allows you to use the day well, avoid unnecessary rushing and arrive near Machu Picchu with time to rest before your private guided visit the following day.

Private Machu Picchu Tour & Return to Cusco
Today is the centerpiece of your journey: Machu Picchu.
Your private guide will accompany you through the experience according to your assigned entry time and circuit. The visit will be planned around the best available ticket option, your physical comfort, photography goals and overall travel style.
Machu Picchu is not only a beautiful archaeological site. With the right guide, it becomes a much deeper experience: a place of sacred geography, advanced engineering, agricultural terraces, astronomical awareness and extraordinary Inca planning.
After the visit, return by bus to Machu Picchu Pueblo. Enjoy lunch before boarding your return train. Upon arrival at the train station, your private driver will transfer you to your hotel in Cusco.

Private Cusco City Tour & Nearby Inca Sites + Free afternoon
Explore Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire and one of the most fascinating cities in South America.
Your private tour may include the Cathedral, Qoricancha, the Main Square and nearby archaeological sites such as Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo and Tambomachay.
This day connects the experience of Machu Picchu with the broader Inca world. Cusco is not just a base for travel; it is the most important cultural destination in Peru.
After the guided tour you will have a free afternoon to walk through the local market, visit San Blas neighborhood, or simple relax at a cafƩ around the main square.

Cusco to Puerto Maldonado & Arrival at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed morning in Cusco before your afternoon flight to Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to Peruās southern Amazon.
Your flight from Cusco is scheduled around 3:00 p.m., arriving in Puerto Maldonado at approximately 4:00 p.m. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred toward the Madre de Dios River for the journey to Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica, your rainforest lodge surrounded by one of Peruās most biodiverse natural environments.
The transfer to the lodge takes approximately 45 minutes, by boat, as this is located within a private ecological reserve, offering a rustic-luxury setting in the middle of the rainforest.
After check-in, receive a short briefing about the lodge and the available à -la-carte excursions. Since you are arriving later in the afternoon, this first evening is designed to be gentle: settle into your cabaña, enjoy the sounds of the rainforest, and have dinner at the lodge.
If timing and conditions allow, your guide may suggest a short introductory walk or a gentle evening orientation. However, the main purpose of this day is to arrive, rest and begin connecting with the Amazon at a comfortable pace.

Lake Sandoval & Inkaterra Canopy Walkway
Wake up surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon rainforest. Today is your first full day of exploration in Tambopata.
After breakfast, visit Lake Sandoval, a glassy oxbow lake located inside the protected Tambopata National Reserve. The experience begins with a rainforest trail before boarding a wooden canoe to quietly explore the lake and its surrounding ecosystem. Lake Sandoval is one of the most beautiful and wildlife-rich experiences in this region. Depending on conditions, you may observe birds, monkeys, turtles, black caimans and, with luck, the endangered giant river otter.
Return to the lodge for lunch and some time to rest.
In the afternoon, experience the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a network of hanging bridges and observation platforms suspended above the forest floor. This gives you a different perspective of the rainforest, allowing you to appreciate the scale of the Amazon from above the trees.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at the lodge.

Gamitana Farm & Creek, Hacienda Concepcion & Rainforest by Night
Today explores another side of the Amazon: its local agriculture, river ecosystems, medicinal plants and nocturnal rainforest life.
Begin with a visit to Gamitana Farm and Creek, reached by boat from the lodge. This experience introduces the relationship between rainforest communities, local crops and Amazonian biodiversity. At Gamitana model farm, you can learn about seasonal forest fruits and how local produce is grown in this remote environment. Afterward, continue toward Gamitana Creek, a dark-water creek surrounded by dense vegetation. This ecosystem is home to abundant flora and fauna, with opportunities to observe birds, turtles and other wildlife along the riverbanks.
Return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon, visit Hacienda Concepcion, Inkaterraās sister lodge located upriver. This area was built on an old cocoa and rubber plantation and has a history connected to missionary and ecological research activity. The visit helps travelers understand how Amazonian plants have been used traditionally and why the rainforest is often described as a natural pharmacy.
After dinner or once darkness settles over the rainforest, join a Rainforest by Night excursion. With your guide and flashlight, explore the forest after dark, when different sounds, movements and species emerge. This is a memorable way to experience the nocturnal side of the Amazon.

Amazon Morning & Flight to Lima
Enjoy your final morning in the Amazon. Wake up to the sounds of the rainforest and take in the natural setting around you lodge one last time.
You will leave the lodge at approximately 9:00 a.m. for the return transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport.
The return journey follows the river and road connection back toward the airport. Upon arrival at the airport, board your flight to Lima, where you can connect with your international departure or continue with any additional arrangements in the city.

Best Time to Take This 12-Day Peru Tour
This private Peru tour can operate year-round, but the experience changes by season. Because it combines the Andes and the Amazon, the best timing depends on your preferred balance of weather, crowds and lodge availability.

May to September
Best for drier weather in the Andes and clearer mountain views. This is also the busiest period for Machu Picchu, so early planning is important. In the Amazon, conditions can still be humid and variable, but rainforest activities operate year-round.

April, October and November
Excellent months for travelers who want a good balance between weather and crowd levels. These months are often especially attractive for private and luxury travel because the Andes can feel less crowded than peak season, while the Amazon remains rewarding for nature-focused travelers.

December to March
The rainy season brings greener landscapes and fewer crowds outside holiday dates. Travelers should expect more variable weather, especially in the Andes and rainforest. This period can still work well with flexible planning and realistic expectations.
For many travelers, April, May, September, October and November offer the best balance of weather, availability, visitor flow and itinerary comfort.
