Machu Picchu Tickets, Circuits & Routes

Machu Picchu entrance is limited and controlled through official circuits and timed entry routes. Since June 1, 2024, the visit system has been organized into 3 main circuits and 10 official routes, each offering a different way to experience the citadel.
For this Full Day Machu Picchu Tour by Train, your entrance ticket is not a general-access ticket. It is issued for a specific traveler, date, time, circuit, and route. Once inside Machu Picchu, visitors must follow the confirmed route and cannot freely change circuits at the entrance.

Recommended Circuit for This Tour

For the Full Day Machu Picchu Tour by Train, our first recommendation is usually Circuit 2A or 2B, when available.
Circuit 2 is often the strongest choice for first-time visitors because it offers a well-rounded Machu Picchu experience: classic viewpoints, important archaeological areas, terraces, temples, and a better sense of how the citadel was organized.
If Circuit 2 is no longer available for your travel date, we will recommend the best alternative based on your entry time, walking comfort, train schedule, optional hikes, and the type of Machu Picchu experience you want. Our goal is to secure the best possible route while keeping the full-day logistics smooth from Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

Intinerary

Cusco or Sacred Valley – Ollantaytambo – Train to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Return

Your day begins with a private early pickup from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley. From there, you travel by private vehicle to Ollantaytambo train station, where you board the train to Aguas Calientes.
The train journey follows one of the most scenic routes in Peru, passing through the Sacred Valley, the Urubamba River canyon, mountain landscapes, cloud forest scenery, and sections of ancient Inca territory.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, your guide assists you with the shuttle bus to Machu Picchu. Your visit follows your confirmed timed entry and official circuit. Inside the citadel, your private guide will explain the history, architecture, temples, terraces, viewpoints, and cultural importance of Machu Picchu.
After the guided visit, you return by bus to Aguas Calientes. Depending on your train schedule, you may have time for lunch, a short walk through town, or a visit to the local artisan market before boarding your return train.
Upon arrival in Ollantaytambo, your private driver will meet you and transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

  • Train: Voyager / Expedition, upgrade available

Optional Add-On Tickets

Classic machu picchu

Huayna Picchu Mountain

This is the famous steep mountain behind Machu Picchu. It is a more adventurous hike and is generally better for active travelers, older teenagers, or adults who are comfortable with steep sections. It is not usually recommended for young children.

Machu Picchu Mountain

This is a longer hike with wide panoramic views. It can be beautiful, but it adds significant walking time and effort. For most families doing a one-day tour from Cusco, it may make the day too long.

Classic machu picchu

Sungate

This is a shorter optional hike 1 hour hike from Machu Picchu, usually connected with Circuit 1 routes when available. It may be a better option than Huayna Picchu for some travelers, but availability and route rules must be checked in advance.
Optional mountain tickets are not automatically included unless specifically listed in your confirmed itinerary. These tickets are limited and must be requested in advance.

Difficulty & Accessibility

This tour is considered easy to moderate. It is not a trek, but Machu Picchu is still an archaeological site with stone paths, stairs, uneven surfaces, narrow sections, and limited shaded areas.
For most travelers, the walking is manageable with a private guide and a comfortable pace. However, the route depends on the confirmed circuit, and some circuits include more stairs or elevation changes than others.

best

Is This Tour Good for First-Time Visitors?

Yes. This is one of the best options for first-time visitors who want to experience Machu Picchu in one day with all major logistics arranged.

family

Is This Tour Suitable for Children or Seniors?

Yes, it can work well for children, seniors, and multigenerational groups, as long as travelers are comfortable walking on uneven stone paths and using stairs. A private guide helps adapt the rhythm whenever possible.

Strollers

Strollers and Limited Mobility

Strollers are not allowed inside the Machu Picchu archaeological site and are not practical on the stone paths. For young children, a baby carrier is recommended.
Travelers with limited mobility should contact us before booking so we can advise on the most suitable circuit and realistic expectations.

Altitude

Altitude

Machu Picchu is located at approximately 2,430 m / 7,972 ft, which is lower than Cusco. Many travelers find it easier to breathe at Machu Picchu than in Cusco, but the day still includes travel, walking, stairs, and changing weather.

This tour normally includes Voyager, Expedition, or a similar tourist-class train, depending on availability. These trains are comfortable, practical, and well suited for travelers who want a complete Machu Picchu day trip with good value.

Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu by Train

Machu Picchu can be visited year-round, but the experience changes by season.
The dry season, from April to October, usually offers better weather and clearer views. The busiest months are May to September, when Machu Picchu tickets and train seats should be booked early.
The rainy season, from November to March, brings greener landscapes and fewer travelers, but rain is more likely. Travelers visiting during this period should bring good rain protection and flexible expectations.
Because this is a full-day tour, timing matters. Train schedules, entrance times, and circuit availability will shape the final flow of the day. Our team will recommend the best available combination based on your travel date

Dry Season (May–Oct)

Clearest conditions, highest demand.

Peak Months (Jun–Aug)

Busiest period—plan early for preferred trains, top stays, and the smoothest routing.

Rainy Season (Nov–Mar)

Greener landscapes and lighter crowds, with a higher chance of rain and mist.

Shoulder Months (Apr & Oct)

An excellent balance of weather and fewer crowds.
