Intinerary

Cusco – Sacred Valley Cultural Stop – Train to Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Return

Your day begins around 8:30 AM with private pickup from your hotel in Cusco. Instead of rushing directly to the train station, you travel through the Sacred Valley and make a cultural stop at a traditional Andean chichería.
This stop is designed to make the journey more engaging for children and more meaningful for parents. Depending on the location and timing, your family may see how chicha is prepared, try the traditional sapo game, meet local guinea pigs, and interact with a more everyday side of Andean life.
After the cultural stop, you continue to Ollantaytambo and board the train to Aguas Calientes. The train journey follows the Urubamba River through one of the most scenic sections of the Sacred Valley.
Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, your guide assists with the shuttle bus up to Machu Picchu. Your visit follows your confirmed timed entry and official circuit. Inside the citadel, your private guide adapts the explanation to your family, using stories, visuals, simple historical context, and a pace that allows for photos, questions, and short breaks.
After the guided visit, you return by bus to Aguas Calientes. Depending on the train schedule, you may have time for lunch, a short walk through town, or the local market before boarding your return train to Ollantaytambo.
Upon arrival, your private driver will meet you and transfer you back to your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.

  • Train: Voyager or similar, upgrade available
  • Meals: Not included by default, lunch add-on available
  • Guided visit: Approx. 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on circuit and family pace
  • Altitude: Machu Picchu approx. 2,430 m / 7,972 ft
  • Return: Train and private transfer
  • Important note: Train schedules, Machu Picchu circuits, entry times, and daily logistics may vary depending on official availability, season, and operational conditions.

Optional Add-On Tickets

Classic machu picchu

Huayna Picchu Mountain

This is the famous steep mountain behind Machu Picchu. It is a more adventurous hike and is generally better for active travelers, older teenagers, or adults who are comfortable with steep sections. It is not usually recommended for young children.

Machu Picchu Mountain

This is a longer hike with wide panoramic views. It can be beautiful, but it adds significant walking time and effort. For most families doing a one-day tour from Cusco, it may make the day too long.

Classic machu picchu

Sungate

This is a shorter optional hike 1 hour hike from Machu Picchu, usually connected with Circuit 1 routes when available. It may be a better option than Huayna Picchu for some travelers, but availability and route rules must be checked in advance.
Optional mountain tickets are not automatically included unless specifically listed in your confirmed itinerary. These tickets are limited and must be requested in advance.

Difficulty & Accessibility

This tour is considered easy to moderate, but Machu Picchu is still an archaeological site with stone paths, stairs, uneven surfaces, narrow sections, and limited shaded areas.
For most families, the walking is manageable with a private guide and a relaxed pace. However, the route will depend on the confirmed circuit, and some circuits include more stairs or elevation changes than others.

best

Is This Tour Good for Kids?

Yes. This tour was designed specifically for families who want a smoother Machu Picchu experience. The later start, cultural stop, private guide, and afternoon visit make it much easier for children than a standard early-morning group tour.

Strollers

Strollers and Baby Carriers

Strollers are not allowed inside the Machu Picchu archaeological site and are not practical on the stone paths. For toddlers or younger children, we recommend using a comfortable baby carrier.

Altitude

Altitude

Machu Picchu is located at approximately 2,430 m / 7,972 ft, which is lower than Cusco. Many travelers find it easier to breathe at Machu Picchu than in Cusco, but the day still includes travel, walking, stairs, and changing weather.

Train Options

This tour normally includes a comfortable tourist-class train, such as Voyager, Expedition, or a similar category, depending on schedule and availability. These trains are practical, reliable, and well suited for families traveling between Ollantaytambo and Aguas Calientes.
For travelers who want a more scenic journey, panoramic train upgrades may be available upon request. These options can make the experience more enjoyable, especially for children and first-time visitors who want better views of the Sacred Valley, the Urubamba River, and the changing landscapes on the way to Machu Picchu.

Best Time to Visit Machu Picchu with Family

Machu Picchu can be visited year-round, but the experience changes by season.
The dry season, from April to October, usually offers better weather and clearer views. The busiest months are May to September, when tickets and trains should be booked early.
The rainy season, from November to March, brings greener landscapes and fewer travelers, but rain is more likely. Families traveling during this period should bring good rain protection and flexible expectations.
For this specific tour, the afternoon visit is intentional. It helps avoid the most rushed early-morning experience and often allows families to enjoy Machu Picchu with a calmer rhythm.

Dry Season (May–Oct)

Clearest conditions, highest demand.

Peak Months (Jun–Aug)

Busiest period—plan early for preferred trains, top stays, and the smoothest routing.

Rainy Season (Nov–Mar)

Greener landscapes and lighter crowds, with a higher chance of rain and mist.

Shoulder Months (Apr & Oct)

An excellent balance of weather and fewer crowds.
