Long-Term Benefits of Responsible Tourism in Peru

Preserves natural and cultural heritage for future generations. Generates stable, long-term income for rural Andean communities. Enhances traveler experiences through deeper connections and fewer mass-tourism pressures. Reduces negative impacts such as waste, carbon emissions, and cultural disruption.

Book a Tour and Plant a Tree Program

When we started Peru Private Tours in 2017 we wanted to be different, we would not only be a regular company, we also had to be an entity with a lot of environmental responsibility, that is why we implemented this system that we have called “Book a Tour and Plant a Tree” a program through which each of our clients for booking a service also provides a minimum amount to make this possible. By sending your reservation confirmation we let you know how many trees you are going to plant. We accumulate throughout the year and in the end we gather everything and take the trees to different communities every year, in 2019 we managed to gather more than 1000 trees! An average of 3 trees per day, and this is thanks to each of our clients who often sent us their congratulations for this program and who entrusted their tours, excursions and experiences in our hands.

Upon arriving in the community we delivered all these trees so that they reforest places that they consider to be in danger of landslides, of course we could not leave them without planting some so we started to plant some of them so that they continue this important environmental activity. They were very happy to finish what we started and we are sure that they will. None of this would be possible without the unconditional support of each of our clients, from Peru Private Tours we want to thank you for this and we are committed to continue working with our environmental responsibility, Thank you very much to each of you for everything.

On the way back to Cusco we could not pass without reviewing the trees that we left in the community of Yuraq Turuyoq the previous year, it was nice to be able to appreciate that people are taking care of those trees and that they are already part of their lives.

The Challenges of Growing Tourism in the Andes

Overcrowding at iconic destinations like Machu Picchu places increasing stress on hiking trails, water systems, and local infrastructure. Without responsible management, this impact accelerates erosion and environmental degradation.

Economic Leakage and Local Communities

While tourism generates revenue, economic benefits often leak away when experiences are dominated by external operators instead of local communities. This weakens long-term development in rural Andean regions.

Fragile Andean Ecosystems at Risk

High-altitude ecosystems—including cloud forests, Andean wetlands, and mountain passes—are especially vulnerable to erosion, pollution, and habitat loss caused by unmanaged tourism and waste along trekking routes.

Sustainable Tourism as a Balanced Approach

Sustainable tourism aims to balance three essential pillars: Environmental protection, Economic benefit for local communities.

What to Consider When Choosing

To select the hotel that matches your desires, here are key factors luxury travelers often care about, with guidance specific to the Machu Picchu area.

Proximity and Access

Staying at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge allows direct entry to Machu Picchu from the lodge, offering minimal transport and maximum convenience. Aguas Calientes options require a short bus ride or walk. Early arrival (sunrise slots) helps reduce crowds.

Views and Setting

Look for rooms with views of Machu Picchu, the Vilcanota River, or surrounding mountain ridges. The sound of rivers or rainforest enhances the luxury atmosphere. Cloud-forest lodges like Inkaterra offer more serene natural surroundings.

Views and Privileges

Private transfers, guided tours, and special experiences such as sunrise breakfasts, rituals, and spa treatments should be included or easily arranged. Luxury hotels often provide concierge support for train schedules and park permits.

Comfort and Amenities

High-quality bedding, in-room heating or fireplaces (important due to cold and humidity), spa-style bathrooms with luxury features such as jacuzzis and scenic views, quality dining options, wellness facilities, and relaxation gardens.

Exclusive Experience

Special ceremonies, strong local cultural ties, botanical experiences, birdwatching opportunities, and orchid gardens distinguish a luxury stay from a generic one.

Explore the Luxury Options

When visiting Machu Picchu, your lodging is more than just a place to sleep—it frames the entire experience. For luxury travelers, proximity, views, ambiance, service, and unique extras make all the difference. These are the top 3 VIP luxury hotels, offering comfort and a beautiful, welcoming atmosphere as the best options at your service.
