Altitude Sickness

As soon as individuals plan their trip to Peru, specifically Cusco, concerns about altitude sickness arise. The air at high altitudes contains less oxygen than at sea level, compelling your body to work harder to procure the oxygen it needs. Over several days at high altitude, your body adjusts to the reduced oxygen levels in the air.

Initial symptoms of altitude sickness may include a headache, fatigue, followed by loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, difficulty sleeping, and labored breathing during exercise. Welcome Ceremony & Introduction

Your Sacred Valley textile workshop begins with a warm Andean welcome at the Andean Textiles Center. Artisans, pututeros and the local varayoc greet you with the sound of the pututo (conch shell) and traditional customs from the community.
Your local expert guide introduces the project, the history of traditional textiles in the region, the recognitions of the weaving center and the role of textiles in Andean life today. You also receive a simple overv

Natural Dyeing – Plants, Wool & Color

Next, you start the hands-on part of the workshop. Together with your assistant and the master weavers, you identify and collect local plants and natural materials used for dyeing. Back in the workshop, you help prepare the alpaca or sheep wool and take part in the full natural dyeing process, watching the colors slowly develop.
Your personal assistant guides you step by step, explaining how each plant creates different tones and how artisans achieve the rich color palette of Andean textiles. All materials are provided, and the wool you dye will later be used in your weaving.

Family-Style Andean Lunch

Around midday, the dyeing activities pause for lunch. You share a homemade, family-style Andean meal with the artisans at the workshop – a relaxed moment to taste local dishes, ask questions and learn more about daily life in the community, far from the typical restaurant setting of standard Cusco day tours.

Weaving Session – Creating Your Textile

In the afternoon, you sit at the loom and transform dyed wool into your own textile piece. Guided by your assistant and the master weavers, you learn how to set up the warp, control the tension and form simple traditional motifs on a backstrap loom or similar structure.
By the end of the session, you will have created a small handwoven piece and will keep both your textile and some of the dyed wool as a personal souvenir. You also receive a certificate issued by the Andean Textiles Center and signed by UNESCO-recognized artisan teachers. Afterwards, your driver meets you at the workshop and takes you back to your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.
