Quick Facts
Why Choose This Salkantay Trek 5D/4N to Machu Picchu with Peru Private Tours?
Many Salkantay itineraries are rushed into fewer days, which often means early pressure on altitude, less time at the best viewpoints, and tighter logistics before Machu Picchu. Our Salkantay Trek 5D/4N to Machu Picchu is built for travelers who want a premium experience—better pacing, stronger support, and a smoother finish.
The extra day allows a more balanced trekking rhythm, more recovery time, and a higher chance of enjoying the route at your own pace—especially around the most demanding sections.
With a small group Salkantay trek format, you get more guide attention, cleaner pacing control, and a better overall experience on the trail—without the “big bus tour” feeling.
We plan the trek around your Machu Picchu entry time and circuit, positioning you in Aguas Calientes the night before so your final day is focused on the experience—not on stressful connections.
Your program includes the essentials travelers care about most: meals during the trek, camping logistics, a 3-star hotel in Aguas Calientes, train ticket, transfers, and a guided Machu Picchu visit—so you can compare options confidently and avoid surprise add-ons.

Detailed Itinerary

Your Salkantay adventure begins early with a pick-up from your Cusco hotel. First, a scenic drive (approximately 3 hours) through the Anta Valley and mountain towns leads to the trailhead near Mollepata/Challacancha. There, you meet your trek crew and begin hiking into the Andes.
Next, the trail climbs at a moderate pace toward Soraypampa (around 3,900 m). By midday, you reach the first campsite, where lunch is served with views of Salkantay and Humantay mountains.
In the afternoon, you continue with an acclimatization hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m). Here, the turquoise glacial lake rests beneath a snow-capped peak, offering calm surroundings and striking reflections.
Afterward, you hike back down to Soraypampa.
In the evening, a hearty dinner is served at camp.
Finally, you settle into your tent or sky dome, enjoying a peaceful night under the Andean sky.

Today is often the most challenging and rewarding day. After an early breakfast, you begin a steep climb toward the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek.
Over several hours, you ascend ancient switchback trails, locally known as the “Path of the 7 Snakes,” until reaching the summit of the pass (~4,650 m / 15,250 ft). At the top, wide panoramas open up, with the Salkantay glacier above and rugged valleys below.
Here, you have time to celebrate and capture the moment after conquering the hardest section of the trek. Then, the trail begins descending into the misty cloud forest on the far side of the pass.
As you hike down, the landscape gradually becomes greener and warmer. Later, you stop for lunch at Wayracmachay, enjoying views of waterfalls and hummingbirds.
By late afternoon, you reach Chaullay, a high-jungle campsite at around 2,800 m. There, you settle in for the night, enjoy dinner, and rest, knowing the toughest part of the trek is behind you.

After breakfast, you set out on a gentler section of the trek. Today, Day 3 follows the Santa Teresa river valley, where the climate becomes semitropical.
Along the way, you hike through green forests, follow the river, and pass small settlements such as Collpapampa. Meanwhile, bird calls fill the trail, and you may spot orchids, butterflies, and fruit trees at lower elevations.
Around midday, you stop for lunch in the La Playa area. Here, you may also taste fresh-picked local fruit.
In the afternoon, the trek continues to Lucmabamba (approximately 2,000 m), a village known for organic coffee farms. There, you set up camp and visit a local coffee farm. If time allows, an optional visit to the Cocalmayo hot springs is available. Finally, enjoy dinner and relax with coffee or coca tea before resting for the night.

Fuel up with breakfast, because today you hike toward your first views of Machu Picchu. First, the day begins with an uphill trek along the historic Llactapata trail, part of an old Inca path.
As you ascend, you pass lush vegetation and may spot tropical flowers and wildlife. After a few hours, you reach Llactapata Pass (around 2,700 m) and the Llactapata ruins. From here, enjoy a distant view of Machu Picchu across the valley.
Then, descend steeply into the Aobamba Valley toward Hidroelectrica. After lunch, continue to Aguas Calientes, either hiking or taking a short train ride. By late afternoon, arrive in town, check into your hotel, and enjoy dinner. Finally, rest early for the Machu Picchu visit tomorrow.

Rise before dawn and take one of the first shuttle buses to Machu Picchu. As a result, you enter the sanctuary early and see the ruins in soft morning light.
With your expert guide, enjoy a 2-hour guided tour along the reserved circuit. Meanwhile, learn about Inca history while exploring temples, terraces, and iconic viewpoints.
After the tour, enjoy free time for photos or optional hikes. Then, descend by bus to Aguas Calientes.
Later, have lunch at your own choice before boarding the train to Ollantaytambo. Finally, meet your driver and return to Cusco, arriving at your hotel in the evening with lasting memories of your Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu.
