Detailed Itinerary

Cusco – Trailhead – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake – Camp

Your Salkantay adventure begins early with a pick-up from your Cusco hotel. First, a scenic drive (approximately 3 hours) through the Anta Valley and mountain towns leads to the trailhead near Mollepata/Challacancha. There, you meet your trek crew and begin hiking into the Andes.

Next, the trail climbs at a moderate pace toward Soraypampa (around 3,900 m). By midday, you reach the first campsite, where lunch is served with views of Salkantay and Humantay mountains.

In the afternoon, you continue with an acclimatization hike to Humantay Lake (4,200 m). Here, the turquoise glacial lake rests beneath a snow-capped peak, offering calm surroundings and striking reflections.

Afterward, you hike back down to Soraypampa.

In the evening, a hearty dinner is served at camp.

Finally, you settle into your tent or sky dome, enjoying a peaceful night under the Andean sky.

Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Wayracmachay – Chaullay

Today is often the most challenging and rewarding day. After an early breakfast, you begin a steep climb toward the Salkantay Pass, the highest point of the trek.

Over several hours, you ascend ancient switchback trails, locally known as the “Path of the 7 Snakes,” until reaching the summit of the pass (~4,650 m / 15,250 ft). At the top, wide panoramas open up, with the Salkantay glacier above and rugged valleys below.

Here, you have time to celebrate and capture the moment after conquering the hardest section of the trek. Then, the trail begins descending into the misty cloud forest on the far side of the pass.

As you hike down, the landscape gradually becomes greener and warmer. Later, you stop for lunch at Wayracmachay, enjoying views of waterfalls and hummingbirds.

By late afternoon, you reach Chaullay, a high-jungle campsite at around 2,800 m. There, you settle in for the night, enjoy dinner, and rest, knowing the toughest part of the trek is behind you.

After breakfast, you set out on a gentler section of the trek. Today, Day 3 follows the Santa Teresa river valley, where the climate becomes semitropical.

Along the way, you hike through green forests, follow the river, and pass small settlements such as Collpapampa. Meanwhile, bird calls fill the trail, and you may spot orchids, butterflies, and fruit trees at lower elevations.

Around midday, you stop for lunch in the La Playa area. Here, you may also taste fresh-picked local fruit.

In the afternoon, the trek continues to Lucmabamba (approximately 2,000 m), a village known for organic coffee farms. There, you set up camp and visit a local coffee farm. If time allows, an optional visit to the Cocalmayo hot springs is available. Finally, enjoy dinner and relax with coffee or coca tea before resting for the night.
